EKU’s Health Services Administration (HSA) program was well represented at the 2018 Kentucky Health Information Management Association (KHIMA) Annual Meeting

EKU’s Health Services Administration (HSA) program was well represented at the 2018 Kentucky Health Information Management Association (KHIMA) Annual Meeting in Lexington on June 18-19.  Both students and faculty were recognized through a variety of awards and scholarships.

Student Ambassadors:  Each year, KHIMA selects four ambassadors from submitted applications.  These student ambassadors assist the association in planning and managing a successful conference.  Duties include: decorating the conference venue, working in the registration center, assisting with the silent auction, and serving as hospitality liaisons.  This year, two of the four ambassadors were from EKU’s Health Services Administration program.

Representatives:  Kelli Blount (from Somerset) and Brittani Taylor (from Crab Orchard)

KHIMA Scholarship:   KHIMA provided two $1500.00 scholarships this year.  Both awards were presented to students from the HSA program at EKU.

Recipients:  Hanna Power (from Winchester) and Brittani Taylor (from Crab Orchard)

Rising Star Award: This award is presented to a KHIMA member who is early in his/her career, but it is already showing signs of developing a successful career within the field of health informatics and information management (HIM).  In addition to personal career development, the recipient must also be active in KHIMA leadership roles.

Recipient:  Jessica Price, MPA, RHIA (HSA graduate – 2014 and current EKU faculty member)

In only 4 years, Jessica has experienced several accomplishments.  These include earning a graduate degree in Public Administration from EKU; serving as a healthcare consultant for HealthTech Solutions in Frankfort, KY; working with the Kentucky Department of Public Health as they implemented a state-wide electronic health record; and becoming an Assistant Professor in Health Services Administration at EKU.  In addition, she has served as the Chair of the KHIMA Event Planning Committee.  Given these achievements, the Awards and Scholarship Committee determined that Jessica is certainly one of its rising stars.

Distinguished Member Award:This award is presented to a KHIMA member who has exhibited sustained commitment and service to the HIM field and to KHIMA.

Recipient:  Dawn Jackson, DrPH, RHIA, CCS-P, FAHIMA

Dawn has been an EKU faculty member for 32 years and has been working in the field of health informatics and information management since 1982.  During this time, she has been extremely active in KHIMA.    Her involvement includes being elected as KHIMA President (1993-1994 and 2013-2014), Vice President (1990-1992), and Second Director (2015-2016).  Through the years, she has served on seven different committees and has been the chair of six committees.  Given her continuous support of KHIMA for over 30 years, the association selected Dawn as their 2018 Distinguished Member Award recipient.
